To help schools and the public contextualize their performance, we have translated data from academic accountability reports into "state ranks" and "similar schools ranks."
Recommendation on how to utilize decile ranks to inform school performance
CCSA believes that school performance and determining the status of a school warrants a deep examination of all available data. The initial filters of our own accountability framework are based on publicly available data which allows the majority of charters to demonstrate academic performance using a set of minimum SBAC and college-readiness indicators. For a small set of schools for which publicly available data does not give the complete picture of academic performance, CCSA recommends looking at a school's own internal measures of academic growth and student outcomes that have been achieved.
These recommendations mirror CCSA's multiple measure review process which is the portion of our accountability framework meant for schools who do not meet the initial criteria of performance. Prior to making an advocacy position on schools, CCSA does a deeper dive on a school's internal data to form a comprehensive picture of academic performance and student outcomes that may not be available by public measures alone. As such, we caution against using the ranks provided as the sole measure for determining the status of a school's performance and instead encourage the use of ranks as an initial set of filters upon which to evaluate schools, measure growth and form initial discussions in regards to a school's performance.
