The California Charter Schools Association will award five $1,500 scholarships to high school graduates of Association member schools. Scholarship awards will be payable to the recipient upon proof of his/her enrollment into an accredited four-year or two-year public or private university or college. The application deadline is Friday, December 10, 2010. Award winners will be notified by January 21, 2011 and will be featured on our website and in the program at the 18th Annual California Charter Schools Conference in San Diego, California, March 7-10, 2011.

Selection Criteria:

  • Scholastic record must reflect a proven ability to succeed at a college or university level
  • Student must be a graduating senior from a charter high school that is a member of the California Charter Schools Association
  • Student must demonstrate need for financial aid

The scholarship is named in honor of Susan Steelman Bragato, the co-founder of the first charter school in California and the founder of the California Network of Educational Charters (which was renamed the California Charter Schools Association in 2003). Sue was one of the first people to recognize the importance of building a strong network of support among charter school leaders statewide. Sue also organized the first California Charter Schools Conference. In honor of her unprecedented contribution to the charter school movement, the Association named this scholarship for her. Sue died in 2005 after a battle with breast cancer.

The online application for the Susan Steelman Bragato Scholarship must be completed by Friday, December 10, 2010. Please contact if you have any questions about the scholarship.
