Los Angeles, CA - Top city officials and education leaders are expected to join thousands of parents at a citywide rally this Saturday, February 4, at Exposition Park in front of the L.A. Memorial Coliseum to demand better public schools in Los Angeles. Among the featured speakers are Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LAUSD Board President Mónica García and Superintendent John Deasy.
The rally will underscore the need for excellent public schools in every community. Too many students in Los Angeles are not getting the education they deserve. In the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), only 56% of students graduate from high school on time. This Saturday, parents, teachers and students from across Los Angeles will join together in a rally to stand up for all public school students and demand that parent voices be heard.
The rally will kick off at 9 a.m. with student performances, and the program will begin at 10 a.m. Local education leaders Ana Ponce, Founder of Camino Nuevo Charter Academies; Yolie Flores, Executive Director of Communities for Teaching Excellence; and Corri Ravare, Executive Director of Families That Can, as well as parents and teachers, will speak at the rally. Univisión 34 news anchor Gabriela Teissier will be the emcee for the event, which will feature both English and Spanish speakers.
The event is coordinated by Families That Can, a statewide organization of charter school parents which is part of the California Charter Schools Association, in partnership with a wide range of community organizations, including the United Way, Families In Schools, Alliance for a Better Community, Communities for Teaching Excellence, EdVoice and Democrats for Education Reform.
