Jed Wallace, president and CEO of the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA), released the following statement today lauding the 20th anniversary of the charter school movement.
"As charter leaders from across the nation gather this week in Minneapolis, MN for the National Charter Schools Conference, we commemorate the important milestone of 20 years since the signing of the first charter law in the nation. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of California's charter legislation, so we are especially proud to be participating in the national celebration."
"With more than 5,600 charter schools operating in the United States, serving more than 2 million students, charters have proven ourselves to be a vital, lasting part of public education. In California, in particular, charters have experienced strong growth--our 982 charters serve more than 412,000 students. But charter schools haven't just increased in quantity; we are reinventing public education."
"We invite the community to join with us in celebrating the movement's successes and the contributions that charters have made to public education and communities over the last two decades."
