10/25/12 Charter News Round-Up Special
October 25, 2012
This week, CCSA released the number of new charter schools that opened in the fall in California, and the results were amazing. With 109 new charters, California now has 1,065 charters, the most of any state. Not only that, but enrollment grew by 70,000 students, and our charters are now serving over 484,000 students. We also released the results of our recent statewide poll, which show a tremendous increase in awareness and support.
These are amazing figures that truly illustrate the importance of charter schools in the public education system, and in the lives of millions of Californians, especially as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary. At a time when we continue to face a precarious economy and budget, the commitment of leaders, parents, teachers and students to open quality schools that respond directly to the needs of students is inspiring, and our primary purpose for continuing our advocacy efforts to ensure charters receive fair funding, adequate facilities, and more.
Media coverage of the New Schools Announcement was amazing as well. Over 250 outlets across the nation posted our results. The most significant was a posting on Yahoo News, which as a reach of over 55 million visitors per day.
Other outlets that covered the release included the Associated Press, MSNBC, the Los Angeles Daily News, Fox 11, ABC 23, the North County Times, the Los Angeles Daily News, KGET, KUSI, KCRA, Big Education Ape, the Oakland Tribune, and the Sacramento Bee.
