Response to Long Beach Press-Telegram Letter-to-the-Editor
January 5, 2015
There is a lot of misinformation about charter schools out there. One mistake some people make is thinking that charter schools are private or for-profit. All charter schools are public schools.
In a recent letter-to-the-editor published by the Long Beach Press-Telegram, reader Raana Jarrahian stated that the California Charter Schools Association "solely represents for-profit, private schools."
This is simply false. The California Charter Schools Association does not represent any private or for-profit schools.
All charter schools are free. They are public schools, just like traditional public schools run by districts. They have greater flexibility, which helps to explain why charter schools tend to academically outperform traditional schools.
Readers deserve facts, so they can make up their minds about complex issues such as education policies. Thank you for the opportunity to correct this misconception.
