February 2017 CEO Message
February 24, 2017
On February 1, in honor of the first day of Black History Month, more than 1,200 charter public school students, parents, teachers, and advocates, including Assembly Members Cooper, Ridley-Thomas and Weber, rallied at the Capitol. Attendees urged legislators to increase access to education models that have effectively improved the educational trajectory of African American students - charter public schools. A legislative briefing followed the rally where attendees, including Margaret Fortune, President and CEO of Fortune School, discussed charter school authorizing opportunities and strategies to close the achievement gap for African American students.
One week later, as the NAACP's nationwide series of Special Hearings on charter schools arrived in Los Angeles, African American leaders, parent and students from California's charter school community delivered a powerful message to the NAACP - charter schools are transforming lives in their communities. Check out video highlights and news coverage from the event, as well as some of the powerful data showcasing African American charter students' achievement, here on CCSA's website.
Also this month, the California Teachers Association (CTA) relaunched their Kids Not Profits campaign in several regions across the state, designed to provide inaccurate information about charter public schools. The campaign consists of a website (www.kidsnotprofits.com) and radio ads running in Los Angeles, Sacramento and the Bay Area. The campaign spreads misinformation about charter schools, including common myths that charter schools are for-profit corporations, do not accept all children and are not accountable. Working on behalf of the charter movement, CCSA launched a campaign this week to counter the "alternative facts" CTA is spreading that includes radio ads, a digital campaign featuring this video, and a website called Charters Work. Help us share the truth about charter schools in our communities across the state.

We hope to see you at the 24th Annual California Charter Schools Conference March 20-23 in Sacramento. Conference is one of my favorite times a year, when we come together to discuss the most relevant issues and opportunities we are facing as a sector.
Let's keep fighting for quality school choice options for all kids and families who deserve our very best.
