CCSA Applauds Governor Brown for Protecting Students Rights

Legislation to Strengthen Student Equity, Access and Due Process Signed into Law

Sacramento, CA - October 13, 2017 - Today, the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) applauded Governor Jerry Brown for signing AB 1360 by Assemblyman Rob Bonta (D-Oakland), which ensures California's charter public schools are accessible to all students, and that no student will be excluded because of enrollment and admissions policies. The bill also strengthens existing statute by enhancing due process rights for students facing dismissal.

"Equity and access are pillars of the charter public school movement. By signing this bill, Governor Brown has made California's charter public schools stronger for students throughout the state," said Carlos Marquez, CCSA's Senior Vice President of Government Affairs. "We thank Assemblyman Bonta for his leadership and hope this bill becomes a model for all of California's public schools to examine their own admissions and disciplinary policies."

CCSA announced support for the bill earlier this year after fighting for common sense amendments that strengthen equity, access and due process for charter public school students facing dismissal. These amendments mirror the intent of the California Charter Schools Act and are consistent with state and federal law. They strengthen critical protections for students, while avoiding excessive and burdensome new mandates on charter public schools.

"I'm thrilled that we were able to work with CCSA to strengthen equal access in admissions and attendance policies for all students to attend California's charter public schools," said Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland). "Practices that exclude or push out certain children or families must be eliminated and I thank Governor Brown for his support on this important piece of legislation."

In addition to support from CCSA, AB 1360 is sponsored by the California Teachers Association (CTA), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, California Federation of Teachers, California School Employees Association, Public Advocates, and Public Counsel.
