California Charter Schools Association President and CEO Myrna Castrejón Issues Statement Regarding the Passing of Former CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin

April 25, 2024

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, California Charter Schools Association President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement regarding the passing of former California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin:

“Superintendent Delaine Eastin was a trailblazer and lived a life of service to California’s education system and the students it serves. As the first woman to serve as State Superintendent of Public Instruction, she shattered a glass ceiling and served as an inspiration to women in the public education sector.

“Superintendent Eastin recognized the value of charter public schools as part of California’s public education system early on, authoring an alternative bill to Senator Hart’s Charter Schools Act of 1992. While Senator Hart’s bill became state law, her bill helped advance the charter public school movement. She led the Department of Education at a crucial growth phase for charters and was dedicated to finding the right balance as new regulations were implemented.

“I was saddened to learn of Superintendent Eastin’s passing as we lost a powerful voice for public education and a strong advocate for all students."
