SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, California Charter Schools Association President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement supporting Governor Gavin Newsom’s nomination of Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber as Secretary of State to fill the vacancy left by newly appointed U.S. Senator Alex Padilla:
“California’s diverse leaders continue to break barriers and we are proud to support Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber’s nomination to Secretary of State.
“Assemblymember Dr. Weber is a tireless advocate for social justice, civil rights and is a valuable partner in our work to increase public education opportunities for all students. She is a trailblazer who is respected by her colleagues in the State Capitol and has the ability to work with legislators from both sides of the aisle.
“We know Dr. Weber will bring the same tenacity and passion to her new role as Secretary of State and build on the historic levels of voter participation we witnessed in last month’s election.
“While we will miss Dr. Weber’s voice as an honest and courageous advocate for students in the Assembly, we look forward to continuing to support her efforts to expand voting rights and fight for civil rights.”
