Statement by CCSA President and CEO Myrna Castrejón in Response to UTLA’s Continued Harassment of Charter School Students, Parents and Teachers

May 8, 2020

In the middle of a global pandemic and historic state budget deficit, UTLA’s priority is to terrorize charter school families and teachers and drive our communities apart, instead of working together

Los Angeles – California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement regarding the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) protest against charter school students, families and teachers outside of the Los Angeles Unified School District offices, followed by harassment of charter leaders and their families at their homes.

Said Ms. Castrejón:

“It is shameful and completely tone deaf that on the day the State announces we’ve gone from a surplus to an historic budget deficit, that will result in painful cuts to the most vulnerable Californians, UTLA’s priority is to defy stay-at-home orders so they may harass and terrorize volunteer charter board members-- public school parents-- and their families at their homes.

“UTLA protestors continue to intimidate charter students and staff, callously labeling them “invaders” and a public health hazard. The bullying must stop. They are pitting families against each other, neighbors against neighbors and creating undue stress in a time when everyone needs support and compassion.

“Their orchestrated campaign is an obvious attempt to use the pandemic to further their political agenda. Together we have a unique opportunity to lift Los Angeles up and support our city in the face of crisis. Our priority should be all kids and families.”
