LOS ANGELES – California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement regarding the introduction of resolution (Res-026-22/23) by Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board members Jackie Goldberg and Rocio Rivas. If passed, the resolution would have a devastating impact on thousands of charter public school students enrolled in more than 100 schools across LAUSD:
“The resolution excluding charter public school students from shared campuses at LAUSD is misguided, divisive, and puts politics before kids and academic outcomes. CCSA opposes the resolution that would negatively affect thousands of students across LAUSD and exclude roughly 50 percent of the current arrangements where a charter public school and district school share a campus.
“Charter schools are public schools, and charter students are public school students with the same rights to a public facility. Voters approved Proposition 39 to guarantee that a school district will provide equitable facilities for charter public schools to operate.
“The resolution by Ms. Goldberg and Ms. Rivas as proposed is illegal, immoral, and divisive – pitting families and students against each other. It will disenfranchise entire school communities, primarily in underserved neighborhoods within LAUSD, where a majority of these campuses are located.
“CCSA is requesting a meeting with the authors of the resolution to ensure they understand how this resolution is divisive and will hurt students, families, and communities. The LAUSD Board should work with charter public schools to create more education opportunities for students, not less.”
