California Charter Schools Association President & CEO Myrna Castrejón Issues Statement on Senate Passage of SB 739

June 1, 2023

SACRAMENTO, CA  California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement regarding the Senate passage of SB 739 by Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil (D-Jackson) on a 28-0 vote:

“Today’s vote provided important recognition from the California State Senate that charter public schools should remain hyper-focused on helping students and teachers recover instead of facing a premature renewal process that distracts them from that mission. The one-year extension on charter renewal will provide authorizers with more complete data that looks beyond the pandemic testing gaps and demonstrates charters’ ability to deliver a high-quality education to students.

“We want to thank Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil for authoring SB 739 and providing the leadership which led to today’s overwhelming support in the State Senate. Senator Alvarado-Gil’s work on this legislation supports student outcomes at all public schools.”
