September 30, 2023

SACRAMENTO, CA  Today, California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement regarding the passing of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA):

“The passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein is a tremendous loss for Californians and the nation. She was a trailblazer and helped usher in a new era for women in politics.

“Earlier this year, CCSA recognized Senator Feinstein with the Hart Vision Award for Public Official of the Year for her long-standing commitment to California’s students and her advocacy for the charter public school movement that broadens access to high-quality public school programs that meet diverse student needs. She was among the most vocal and consistent supporters of charter public schools in the U.S. Senate for the past 30 years. She advocated for increased funding to the federal Charter Schools Program, which provided new high-quality public education opportunities for students, especially for Black and Brown students in struggling communities.

“On behalf of the California Charter Schools Association and the entire charter public school community, we extend our sincere condolences to Senator Feinstein’s family.”
