SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, California Charter Schools Association President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement in response to Assemblymember and Assembly Education Committee Chair Al Muratsuchi's (D–Torrance) decision to withdraw a proposed amendment to AB 1348 that would have stripped charter public schools of critical emergency protections if immigration enforcement actions disrupted their school communities:
"We thank Assemblymember Muratsuchi for hearing the deep concerns of the charter public school community and appreciate his decision to withdraw an amendment that would have severely impacted charter public schools across California.
AB 1348, championed by Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains (D–Bakersfield), is designed to ensure that all public schools -- including charter public schools -- are protected from funding losses when student attendance drops due to immigration enforcement activities.
We look forward to continuing to work with Assemblymember Bains and Assemblymember Muratsuchi on this important legislation and appreciate that our community’s concerns were heard by everyone.”
