CCSA Reaffirms Support for Immigrant School Communities Amid Military Presence in Los Angeles

June 11, 2025

LOS ANGELES, CA – California Charter Schools Association President and CEO Myrna Castrejón is issuing this statement in response to active-duty Marines arriving in Los Angeles amid ICE protests as Governor Gavin Newsom files to suit block deployment:

“Our hearts are with the immigrant students and families across California who are feeling fear and uncertainty in light of recent events. At the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA), we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to safe, welcoming school communities where every child — regardless of background or immigration status — is valued and supported. Charter public schools serve thousands of immigrant families, many of whom are pillars of our communities. We stand with them today and every day.

In addition, we are doubling down on our support of AB 1348, championed by Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains (D–Bakersfield), designed to ensure that all public schools -- including charter public schools -- are protected from funding losses when student attendance drops due to immigration enforcement activities.

We urge all education leaders and policymakers to join us in safeguarding stability, dignity, and promise of every student’s educational journey. Our schools will continue to be places of refuge, belonging, and opportunity — because every child deserves the freedom to learn without fear."
