Statement by California Charter Schools Association Regarding US Supreme Court Decision to Uphold DACA

June 19, 2020

Los Angeles – Today, in a 5 to 4 vote, the United States Supreme Court ruled to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program, which grants undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children permission to live, go to school and work lawfully.

California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following response to the ruling:

“We commend the US Supreme Court’s decision to uphold DACA for the tens of thousands of immigrant families and students that charter schools serve in California. It is a decision that upholds American values and lives up to the promise that we are the land of opportunity.

“CCSA is proud of Dreamers currently teaching and learning in our public charter schools and of our graduates that will go on to be productive members of the community and our country. As we endeavor to close the opportunity gap, we see this as another victory in ensuring we get one step closer to achieving equitable access to high-quality education for every student.

“America is a nation of immigrants, and Dreamers are part of the fabric of our nation. A free and quality education is a human right for every child, period.”

California charter schools have been a welcoming, safe space for all students including Dreamers, where diverse perspectives are respected and student safety--both physically and emotionally--remains the top priority.

Since 2017, CCSA has been an outspoken critic of the elimination of DACA, championing it as a lifeline for immigrant children who deserve the right to a quality education.
