California Charter Schools Association President and CEO Myrna Castrejón Issues Statement on Governor Newsom’s Mask Mandate Announcement

March 1, 2022

SACRAMENTO, CA  California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) President and CEO Myrna Castrejón issued the following statement regarding Governor Newsom’s announcement that the statewide mask mandate for K-12 schools will be lifted after March 11, 2022:

“Governor Newsom’s announcement that the statewide mask mandate for schools will be lifted in two weeks is a welcome step in California’s return to normalcy after two years of pandemic emergency response. The timeline for the end of the mandate provides California’s charter public schools the needed time to work with their communities and implement appropriate policies to update their masking policies based on local conditions or health orders. The autonomy and flexibility of charter public schools will allow them to be immediately responsive to State guidance and work with parents, educators, and the local community, while continuing to provide a safe and welcoming educational environment as conditions evolve and we enter a new stage of pandemic response to endemic.”
