Hundreds of Watts Students and Families to Attend LAUSD Board Meeting as Board Decides Future of Historic Locke High School

March 11, 2026

Vote Today Will Determine Whether Nearly Two Decades of Turnaround Work Continues

LOS ANGELES, CA - More than 200 students, parents, educators, alumni, and community leaders from the Watts community are expected to attend today's Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education meeting as the Board prepares to vote on whether Locke College Preparatory Academy will continue operating under Green Dot Public Schools.

The vote concerns Locke High School, founded in 1967 as a promise of opportunity to the Watts community. Nearly two decades after a major turnaround effort began at the campus, supporters say the school has established stability and academic progress for students who often enter far behind grade level.

While the LAUSD Board considers charter items regularly, today's decision involves a historic neighborhood high school with deep community roots and a long-term turnaround effort that has drawn support from families, alumni, and local leaders.

Students and families are expected to attend the meeting and speak during public comment in support of continuing the work underway at Locke.
