California Charter Schools Association Issues Statement on Mayacamas Charter Middle School Court Ruling

July 1, 2023

SACRAMENTO, CA  The California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) issued the following statement regarding the ruling by the Sacramento Superior Court that overturned the State Board of Education approval of the Mayacamas Charter Middle School:

“Yesterday’s court ruling came as a shock for the parents and educators who have been working to make Mayacamas Charter Middle School a reality, and who were deprived of their rights by the Napa Valley Unified School District when it arbitrarily and unlawfully denied the charter in late 2021. The State Board of Education did the right thing when it acknowledged and overturned the District’s and County’s abuses of discretion, intentionally meant to obstruct the community’s desire for an outstanding choice in public education.

“CCSA joins the school community’s outrage at this court decision since it fails to consider the needs of the entire Napa community, including the academic needs of the students the school proposes to serve. CCSA has supported the parents in their effort to provide quality options to students of Napa. We will continue to support the parents and school as they consider all the options available in their journey to open their school.”
