California Charter Schools Association Issues Statement on Planned Strike at Oakland Unified School District

May 4, 2023

OAKLAND, CA – The California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) issued the following statement regarding the planned teacher strike on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) by the Oakland Education Association (OEA), a member of the California Teachers Association:

“The planned one-day strike does not include independent charter public schools that operate within the OUSD boundaries. Charter public school students and families should know that we will remain open and student learning will continue without interruption.

“CCSA believes in the dignity and value of all education workers and hope that negotiations between labor leaders and the District can be resolved as fairly and quickly as possible with the least amount of harm to students and their needs.

“Learning loss is real and we must work together to mitigate the compounding impacts the pandemic has had on academics as well as the social emotional wellbeing of students.

“At schools where charter public school students and traditional public school students share a campus as designated by OUSD, we ask union supporters picketing those campuses to respect children and families going into their school to get an education.”
